In terms of cruelty-free beauty products, people are most commonly concerned with what makeup they are using. Haircare products are often pushed to the side, as people just aren’t as concerned about their animal testing policies.

But, there are still a huge number of hair care brands that still test on animals, making them not cruelty-free.

Is OGX Cruelty-Free?

Unfortunately, OGX is not a cruelty-free beauty brand.

A common haircare brand found at the drugstore is OGX or Organix. This is a popular brand that sells shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products.

Their products have raised many questions and concerns. Let’s address them and set the record straight.

OGX Is Not Cruelty-Free

Yes, you read that right! OGX is not a cruelty-free beauty brand.

Here is their statement that can be found in the FAQ section of their official website parent Johnson and Johnson:

“At OGX, we care deeply about the integrity of our products and our actions. When it comes to animal wellbeing, we share your concerns, and believe that testing cosmetic and personal care products on animals should be obsolete. That is why we do not test any of our cosmetic or personal care products and ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, except in rare situations where animal testing is required by law or where alternatives to validate safety data do not yet exist.”

Cruelty-Free Alternatives

Before we completely dive in, here are some of our favorite cruelty-free alternatives. They are affordable and worth it!

These brands carry the most amazing hair care lines for all types of hair and are cruelty-free!

Is OGX Vegan?

OGX is not 100% vegan.

Their products contain ingredients that are derived from animals. Some non-vegan ingredients that are in their shampoos and conditioners include whey and albumen.

Is OGX Organic?

OGX can be an extremely misleading brand. Even though their brand is named Organix, they are definitely not an organic brand. The brand is not cruelty-free nor vegan.

Also, they don’t disclose their full list of ingredients on their website (Major red flag!)

OGX in China

OGX does sell their hair care products in China. OGX is sold in the largest beauty convenience store in Asia called Watson’s.

The issue with OGX selling their products in mainland China is that they are required by law to test on animals.

Since OGX sells in China, they cannot be considered a cruelty-free brand.

Also, since they are owned by their parent company, Johnson & Johnson, they don’t have full control over animal testing policies.

OGX Parent Company

Yes, OGX is owned by the parent company Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is not a cruelty-free brand, as they allow their products to be sold in mainland China. This means they are required by law to test on animals in China. Johnson & Johnson’s animal testing policy directly correlates to OGX’s policies since OGX is owned by Johnson & Johnson.

Is OGX Gluten-Free?

OGX has various products that do contain gluten. They state that they do not keep their gluten-free products up to date. They state that it is up to the consumer to read the label and make sure whatever they are buying does not have any gluten in it.

Here is the list of products they sell that contain gluten:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OGX Sulfate-Free?

OGX says that most of its products do not contain sulfates. A few of their products do contain sulfates.
Always read the label of whatever you are buying to ensure that there are no sulfates in the ingredient list.

Is OGX PETA Cruelty-Free Approved?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. In 2015, PETA removed and uncertified them as being cruelty-free. This is because of the sole reason that they sell their hair care products in mainland China where they are required to test on animals.
OGX is also not certified by Ethical Elephant as being cruelty-free. This is due to the same reason that they sell in mainland China.
If OGX wants to be certified as cruelty-free by PETA and Ethical Elephant, they would have to stop selling their products in mainland China. This means they would probably need to break away from Johnson & Johnson unless they also want to change their animal testing policy.

Is OGX Non-comedogenic?

OGX does not disclose on its website if all of their products are non-comedogenic. However, we can confirm that some are. For example, the Biotin & Collagen shampoo and conditioner are non-comedogenic.

Is OGX Paraben-Free?

Surprisingly, OGX says that every single one of their shampoos and conditioners are 100% paraben-free.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, OGX is neither cruelty-free nor vegan. Their misleading branding makes consumers believe that they are an organic, ethical hair care brand.

Hopefully, this brings more clarity to you as the consumer. Also, we hoped that this shed some light on Organix’s unethical practices. Let us know what you think of the alternative cruelty-free brands above!
